looking at buying a truck that can pull a 4 horse bumper pull?

i`m looking at buying a contact that can pull a horse trailer with 4 horses on it. what should i look for? should i get a 4 by 4? a disel? a 3/4 or a 1 ton? i only tow during may - october. so i don`t need to anxiety about snow. thanks

That's a lot of weight---what, about 3 tons with the trailer, do you think? Definitely a diesel and probably a dually. The 4X4 format depends on whether you'll be on muddy ground, snow, etc.
  • Four horses constitutes a lot of weight. I would go big, 1 ton at least and a dually configuration for the hindquarters axle. 4X4 is nice if you need it for mud/snow etc, but pricey and drops the mileage if you don't need it. Diesel will give you the low end torque you want for pulling that weight and give you acceptable mileage down the highway. So a 1 ton 4x4 dually with a diesel will probably set you back as much as a Mercedes Roadster, but then you will have your horses along for the proceed on.
  • Any Diesel will be able to do this. Any Gas 3/4 or 1 ton would be able to as well. The diesel would be more expensive to buy, but be more efficient and more powerful over the life of the truck. It's all about if you'd rather disburse money now or later. Most likely a 1/2 ton would be able to pull this, since it would have enough power too, but the suspension would probably be bottomed out.
  • You be in want of a Chevrolet or GMC diesel.
  • Definately need 4x4 unless you want the horses to be pulling the truck more than the other way around... With gas prices the way they are, righteous estimate how much your full trailer will weigh and get the smallest engine that can competently pull that weight. used 4-horse camper trailers
