How to stop grasshoppers from eating leaves?

Last spring we planted an apple sapling, but by slump, the grasshoppers had eaten most of the leaves. How can we prevent that this year, without using chemicals that kill the grasshoppers? That's to say, are there chemicals or organic materials that will arm's length the grasshoppers? We tried without success to find a net we could put over the tree, but the nursery only had bird nets with a too wide mesh for our purpose. Thanks.
